Family Surfing Night, #5

So many goofy videos.
So much laughter.
So little seriousness.

:o) :o) :o)

Our rules:
we gather in the family room with our laptops.
we surf the web for 30 minutes.

at the end of 30 minutes, everyone shows the best/funniest/favorite thing they found while surfing the webbernets and we vote for the best one.

Videos are limited to (approximately) 3 minutes in length.

The WINNER shall be the proud and much envied recipient of the Family Surfing Night Traveling Trophy, to be affixed to the refrigerator with their name for all to see:

From Dan ... a cute caveman video ...

From Abbie ... a dramatic song from her favorite internet personality, Tobuscus ... who has somehow been referenced in every. single. conversation with her for the past six months ...

From Melissa ... Andy Kaufman ... Saturday Night Live ... Mighty Mouse ...

From Ben ... a funny, kind of embarrassing story from ... that guy ... Olan Rogers ...

From Nathan ... I can't even explain ... totally random humor ...

From Aaron ... the Minecraft humor just. won't. stop!  Bonus:  this video also involves Tobuscus ...

And our winner is ...

Every time I watch this video, the part where he sings
"Cooooooooooold Plaaaaaaaaaay"
gets stuck in my head.
And then I laugh because he's being so serious ... and he is totally not serious.

You go, Abbie!
Congrats to my girl!

One for the Bucket List, Part 4: Inside Hearst Castle

In December my sister and I took a perfectly wonderful trip to California.
We drove down Highway One from San Francisco to Cambria (see that post here) …
took a backroad through the hills from Walmart (see that post here) …
and visited Hearst Castle (see Part 1 here).

This castle was the 30 year project of William Randolph Hearst and architect Julia Morgan.
They began work in 1919 and, as beautiful as it is,
it still wasn't complete in Mr. Hearst’s mind when he died in 1951.

As he furnished the castle, Mr. Hearst traveled all over the world to acquire furnishings appropriate for “the ranch”, as he called it.  Everything you see inside, including artwork, sculptures, carvings, ceiling panels, furniture, rugs, tilework, tapestries ... everything  … has some historical significance.
And your tour guide can tell you anything you want to know about everything you see.

Being there in December was especially enchanting,
since the castle was decorated for Christmas as it would have been in Mr. Hearst’s day.

There were two 18 foot Christmas trees in the Gathering Room, one on either end.  Mr. Hearst especially loved Christmas, and would have a Christmas party for the children of his employees.  One tree was for the boys, one was for the girls, and the children were invited to choose a gift from underneath the trees.  One child of a former employee told about selecting a gift that turned out to be a bicycle.

The door to the dining room is through the wall of carved seating in the Gathering Room, and that wall also has a secret door that Mr. Hearst used to enter the Gathering Room.
Because every castle needs a secret door.

Mr. Hearst enjoyed entertaining, and his guests were expected to contribute to making it a pleasant party.
No going to your room and playing the recluse!

So if dinner isn’t quite ready yet, perhaps you’d like a game of billiards?

Or you might be more at home in the upstairs library …

Or maybe you’d like to spend a little time in Mr. Hearst’s personal study (this was my favorite room) …

Most of the bedrooms have adjoining sitting rooms, if you’d rather …

Each, of course decked out with priceless antiquities

And  a great view …

Oh, but there’s the call to dinner … shall we into the dining room?

On one end of the dining room is a balcony for the musicians.  On the other end is a giant fireplace.  Mr. Hearst’s seat was in the center of the long table.  Our tour guide told us that guests were generally seated close to Mr. Hearst at the beginning of their visit, but as their stay extended, their seat assignments would migrate to the ends of the table.  Except, as the story goes, for one of the Marx brothers.
He tended to annoy Mr. Hearst, so he was seated right beside the blazing fireplace his entire stay.

It was suggested to Mr. Hearst that the high windows in the dining hall be replaced with stained glass.
But he opted for clear glass … certain that the angels would prefer to keep their view :o)

Guests were invited to the castle with a specific arrival date but no mention of departure.
You would simply know  when it was time to leave.

ummmmmmmmm ... would never be okay?

Suddenly ...

I really don't remember the moment we decided to homeschool.
When the time came, I just couldn't fathom sending my little guy off
to spend his kindergarten days with someone else.
There were more compelling reasons, but that's the one that pulls on my heart strings.

Fast forward thirteen years and ...

we have a graduate!!!

We've been members of a local homeschool co-op for several years.

Last year, graduation  popped up on the radar.  I got an email addressed to the families with Juniors.
It was a shock to realize it wasn't a mistake.

I knew our co-op hosted a graduation ceremony, but hadn't really paid much attention to it.
It was our turn!

Naturally, there was a rehearsal ...

And during rehearsal, the junior class was busy decorating the seniors' cars ...

And
suddenly

graduation day is here.

Each graduate had a professionally made tribute video narrated by their parents.

and they exited to the Phil Collins song "On My Way".
Perfect!

After the ceremony there was a reception, and the graduates each had their own memory table
where they received their guests.

At home, we roasted the two 2012 homeschool grads in our family ...

These boys have been hanging out together since ...

forever :o)

One day they're playing with slinkys in the playroom,
then suddenly ...

they're graduates!

Wildflowers

They'll be mowing the hay at the JustB this week.  It's always good to have the fields cleared ... but it also means saying goodbye to the lovely wildflowers, so the dogs and I went to pick one last bouquet.

I took a bouquet to my sweet friend Julie, and she asked if I grew them.
Ha!  No, I did not grow them, they're wildflowers.
Oh, Julie says, that counts!

Hurrah!  they count!

Ruby knows she's not supposed to be in the cab.

She's really supposed to be in the back.

The flowers are lovely ...

But it's definitely time to mow, because the is grass higher than the hood of the truck!  It makes the most wonderful swishing sound when you drive through it.

They'll be harvesting bales of hay but I prefer the flowers ...

Many years ago on a trip with my Mom and Dad I got this tall vase as a souvenir ...

because I knew  that my future husband would certainly bring me lots and lots of flowers.
I like living at the JustB and having a whole field of them right out my back door even better.
LtDan gets credit for that ... it counts  :o)
